Dear Customers,

To our regret most of our Free DNS and Default v2 nameservers are under DDoS attack.

If your domain name(s) is using our Free DNS or Default DNS v2  (freedns1-5.registrar-servers.com, dns1-5.registrar-servers.com) the following services may be affected:

-          domain resolving;
-          domain host record updates;
-          URL and email forwarding.

Unfortunately, there is no current ETA for the issue. We will keep you updated on the progress.

If your affected domain name is using DNS V2, it is possible to switch it to our backup DNS V1 system. It can be done in the following way:

Sign in to your Namecheap account
Select Manage Domains in the My Account area. It can be reached by clicking on your username on the black bar located at the top of the page
Click on the domain you wish to modify and select Switch to DNS System V 1
Put a check mark on Transfer your domain to DNS System V 1
Click Save Changes
Please accept our sincere apologies for the inconvenience caused. Thank you for your continued support and patience.

Kind regards,
Namecheap Support Team

update @ 18:50 GMT  | 13:50  EST

We are still in the process of mitigating the attack and are working hard to ensure a quick resolution. In the meantime there is a possibility to switch affected domains to our backup V1 DNS system. Please visit our Knowledgebase for more detailed instructions.

update @ 19:52 GMT | 14:52 EST

We continue to mitigate an extremely large scale DDoS against our global DNS platform. We are making some progress on this and a number of our DNS servers are now responding. As we filter the bad traffic and make some enhancements, we expect our DNS quality of service to rapidly improve over the next 45 minutes.

We appreciate your patience while we fight off these DDoS attacks and will post a full evaluation when we’ve fully mitigated the attack.

update @ 21:42 GMT | 16:42 EST

We have successfully mitigated most of the DDoS attack and services are returning to normal. Services may be somewhat degraded while everything returns to normal over the next 60 minutes. Thank you for your understanding and patience during this difficult time.

update @ 2:50 GMT | 9:50 PM EST

We are glad let you know that the attack is completely over and all services are fully functional. We greatly appreciate your patience and understanding in this matter.

Breakdown of the attack

Here’s the official response and breakdown of the attack from Namecheap CEO Richard Kirkendall and VP Matt Russell:

Today is one of the days that as a service provider who strives to deliver excellence day in and day, you wish you never had.

At around 15.55 GMT / 11.55 EST, a huge DDoS attack started against 300 or so domains on our DNS platform. Our DNS platform is a redundant, global platform spread across 3 continents and 5 countries that handles the DNS for many of our customers. This is a platform meticulously maintained and ran, and a platform that successfully fends off other DDoS attacks on an almost-daily basis.

Today, however, I am compelled to announce that we struggled. The sheer size of the attack overwhelmed many of our DNS servers resulting in inaccessibility and sluggish performance. Our initial estimates show the attack size to be over 100Gbps, making this one of the largest attacks anyone has seen or dealt with. And this is a new type of attack, one that we and our hardware and network partners had not encountered before.

We responded with our well-practiced mitigation plan while also enabling our backup system for those with affected domains.

It took us around 3 hours to fully mitigate the attack, working closely with our hardware and network vendors. At this moment in time, 99% of our services are back to normal.

I’d like to take this time to apologize to those customers affected. I also wish to iterate that we will learn from this attack and come back stronger, and more robust. We are bringing forward a key DNS infrastructure enhancement program that will see us massively expand the size of our DNS infrastructure and our ability to absorb and fend off attacks like these. We remain firmly committed to delivering the absolute best service possible to our loyal customers.

 Update @ February 21, 8:40 AM GMT | 3:40 AM EST

Unfortunately, most of our Free DNS and Default v2 nameservers are under DDoS attack. Our technical team is in the process of mitigating the attack and are working hard to ensure a quick resolution. We sincerely apologize for these inconveniences.

Update @ February 21, 9:07 AM GMT | 4:07 AM EST

We are glad to let you know that the DDoS attack is over and all services are fully functional. Please accept our apologies for the inconveniences caused by this issue and thank you for your patience and understanding.
