If you want to have a car in PORTUGAL, don't buy one in the Netherlands, the cost to legalize it in PORTUGAL is way to expensive and the yearly tax to you will end up paying is equal to a new car.

The cost for legalizing it will be compensated by the much cheaper second hand buying prices here in The Netherland.

A 9-3 2.2 ttid (old model) you can buy here for 300 euros (three hundred). A petrol (non-turbo) for 500 euros and LPG for 1000 euros. Then you have one between 1998-2001 with 300000 kms (which is peanuts for the average SAAB) on the clock.
Second I will need to have a car to move. As long as I am officially living in NL I am required to have a Dutch registration on my car.
And living in two countries at the same time officially is not possible, as you have to prove you cancelled your personal registration (not your car's) in the municipality (in my case Terneuzen) you used to live in.
I read on Dutch PORTUGAL forum, it's not that hard to get Portuguese plates for a Dutch car, besides that IMTT can be a bit slow.
Second there is an insurance company (car/house) in PORTUGAL that has Dutch people on their payroll and they also provide help with importing a car as personal belongings (or whatever its called to get ISV exemption).
I already asked them what a car insurance would cost with my ex-9000 as an example. That would be 300 euros per year for third party, animal collisions and damage by weather influences (I got hail damage on my last 9000 and that was a very good looking car before that, so now I get my cars in a more extended insurance, I only pay 5 euros extra per month for that. Unfortunately my 9000 was only third-party insured
BTW. I don't want a 9-3 ttid, because you only have them in manuals.
Oh road tax (IUC) for a SAAB 9000 here (petrol): € 744 per annum. LPG (we have two LPG categories G2 and G3, you get rebate for G3 on your ICC) G3=€ 1088per annum , diesel (9-3's) € 1440 per annum. As I explained before our IUC is based on the fuel kind AND the WEIGHT of the car. Cilynder content or CO2 emission doen't matter.

Para visualizar hiperligações por favor faça LogIn the SAAB 9000 I had (it was a 2.3i, petrol) would be taxed with € 112,89 + € 187,97 (I believe CO2-emission was 249 g/kms) = € 300,86. That's still a lot cheaper than here.
The only bad thing is that Finanças will base IUC on first Portuguese registration and not on first original foreign registration. So I will have to use the post 2007 table.
