Who cares about a Saab 900? A whole bunch of people, evidently.

Vampire Weekend discovered this recently when they inadvertently angered enthusiasts of the Swedish car manufacturer by burning two of its discontinued 900 series cars in a promo for their upcoming album, Modern Vampires of the City.

The video, which features the two 900s scorching in slow motion to the band's upcoming single "Diane Young," raised the ire of Saab devotees and car lovers everywhere when it was discovered that the charred lorries in question were purchased under false pretenses from their loving owners. (Noooooooo!)

"I don't even have anything snarky to say about this one," Jalopnik writer Patrick George wrote in an article subtly titled Vampire Weekend Are A Bunch Of Dicks. "I'm just gonna go off somewhere and be sad for a while."

News of the outrage circulated around the internet, eventually reaching the group -- who claim they were stunned by the accusation.

"I want people to understand that we do respect cars and the last thing we want to do is to fuck up a collector's item or something like that," Vampire Weekend singer Ezra Koenig tells Spinner. "Hopefully people believe me when I say that our record label was looking to purchase the cheapest, oldest cars possible; they weren't trying to buy a beautiful perfect condition car."

In fact, Koenig claims, his songwriting partner and group multi-instrumentalist Rostam Batmanglij has a special affinity for the now-bankrupt Swedish automaker.

"Rostam especially loves Saabs," Koenig claims. "When he grew up his family drove a Saab."

Jalopnick claims the two 900s in the video, "were deeply loved by their owners who wanted to see them go to a nice new home," which Koenig disputes. "From what I understand those old ones actually had a lot of electrical problems."

"If the people selling their cars felt mislead by the production company that bought them... of course if we had been there, if we had been a part of it we would never lie to somebody just to get a car -- we could have easily found something else.

"Stuff like that, we hope that that wasn't done dishonorably."

É uma verdade que isto cada vez mais acontece... infelizmente...
Lembro-me de ter visto o makeoff do "3 duques" em que eles deram cabo de não sei quantos Dodge Chargers... carros míticos, antigos, que nunca mais serão fabricados e que começam a ser escassos...
Podiam usar réplicas em fibra iguais... possivelmente até ficariam mais baratos.. mas não... deram cabo de uma dezena... grrr

Mas nunca esperava uma reacção destas de uma marca "pequena" como a saab
Parece que os entusiastas estão bem atentos, atitude que nunca tinha visto em outras marcas.
